This has become a favorite performance for New G of all the summer SingOuts. The camp is for kids who have grown up in difficult family circumstances, but thanks to the efforts of local volunteers (organized by Sandy and Ken Hamlin and the First Christian Church in St. Joe), these kids have the time of their life. New G has been performing for the kids for several years now. It’s one of the smallest audiences we perform in front of – both in stature and numbers (about 20 kids) – but it leaves a lasting impression on everyone. Two stories: one Singer was heard to say this is her favorite performance of the year. Last year she received a ring from one of the campers; this year, she wore it back to camp, and the same camper was also in the audience. And personally, my story happened when I was handing out pens for the campers to get autographs from the Singers. I handed him one of those Bic pens you can buy for about $2 for a box of 30, and he looked at me with wide eyes and asked “can I keep this?” I could only choke out the words, “yes, you sure can”. Many local businesses also support the kids from various donations of food and clothing. Congrats to Ken, Sandy and all the volunteers (some of whom are former New G members) for the dedication helping these kids have a good time.
